On 9 April 2017 the Barbara Cappochin Foundation and the Italian National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Conservationists (CNAPPC) launched the 2017 edition of the Barbara Cappochin Prize, founded in remembrance of architecture student Barbara Cappochin.
Architects or architectural firms of any nationality who are recognized by the professional association of architects in their country are eligible to submit their works completed between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2017 in the following categories:
The International Jury will be composed by distinguished architects. ACE will be represented by Arch. Roger Riewe, who has recently participated to the ACE-EAAE-CNAPPC Symposium held on 6 May 2017 in Rome on Architectural Education (watch the video).
Jury Members
All the works submitted will be shown in an exhibition lasting for at least 60 days and on the Barbara Cappochin Foundation and CNAPPC websites. The winner will be rewarded with a prize of 30.000€.

Krakkó város és a Lengyel Építész Szövetség Krakkói Tagozata nagy tisztelettel teszi közzé felhívását a Krakkói Nemzetközi Építészeti Biennálé pályázatain való részvételre.
Ebben az évben a Biennálé (MBA KRK 2017) Október 12-13-án a krakkói ICE Kongresszusi Központban kerül megrendezésre. A Biennálé kurátora Grzegorz Stiasny lengyel építész, építészeti kritikus. A nyolc építészből álló nemzetközi bírálóbizottságban a lengyel, olasz és finn tagok mellett a magyar építészeket Wesselényi-Garay Andor a Magyar Építőművészek Szövetsége delegáltja képviseli.
A Biennálét 1985 óta minden évben megrendezik. Az idei Biennále jelmondata: „A hátsó udvar-a képzelőerő helye” A téma a kiírók megfogalmazásában a város félig magántereit jelenti . Ez a hátsóudvarok, tömbbelsők különböző módon hasznosított világa, melyet kerítések osztanak részekre, amely drótkerítések, falak, szemeteskukák és autók helyszíne, egyes részeken gondozott zöldfelületekkel. Háztömbök közötti tájak, sokszor a szocialista kor beépítései, olyan területek, amiket ma leginkább senki sem használ, nincs igazán céljuk, és jellemzőjük leginkább a rosszul gondozott zöldfelület, amit helyenként oszt meg egy-egy térképző-, kertépítési elem vagy ritkán egy gondozott kiskert.
A kiíró a Biennále résztvevőitől különböző formátumú prezentációkat vár a vizsgált témában és területen, és különös tekintettel az alábbi megközelítési módokra:

A Biennálé elvárt eredménye a közösség aktivizálása az épített környezet jobb minőségért, a félig magántulajdonú terek 
megnyitása a közösség felé. A vizsgálat során nemcsak praktikus, de esztétikai és lélektani szempontokat szem előtt tartva, és alapvetően emberbarát és élhető környezetként kíván tekinteni ezekre a városi terekre.
A pályázatra a jelentkezési határidő 2017. augusztus 16. A pályázatok beadási határideje: 2017. szeptember 4. (a postabélyegző kelte). A pályázatok első három helyezettje díjazásban részesül, az első helyezett díja az „A” kategóriában 50 000 zloty (cca. 3 650 000 Ft), „B” kategóriában 10 000 zloty (cca. 730 000 Ft) „C” kategóriában 7000 zloty (cca. 510 000 Ft), a pályázat során egy Fődíj is kiadásra kerül.

In a total of 38 sessions, over 220 speakers from 40 nations are giving presentations. The topics of this year’s conference include new design methods for sustainable building envelopes; responsive and adaptive building skins; kinetic architecture; smart glazing for advanced daylight control; new materials; additive manufacturing/3D print of the building envelope; Building Information Modeling; building integrated photovoltaics, and building refurbishment. The building skin plays a key role in terms of improving the energy efficiency of a building. By fostering lively exchange between architects, engineers, energy advisors, scientists and the building industry, the conference will shed light on the significance of the building skin, with a view to putting scientific know-how into practice. Dialogue between these groups should encourage technology transfer and inter-disciplinary action within the construction industry. The talks are predominantly in English, with two sessions being held in German.

DEFLAT KLEIBURG in Amsterdam by NL architects and XVW architectuur WINNER OF THE EUROPEAN UNION PRIZE FOR CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE - MIES VAN DER ROHE AWARD 2017 THE BRUSSELS STUDIOS MSA/V+ AWARDED THE EMERGING ARCHITECT PRIZE
Brussels, May 12, 2017 - At a press conference held today in Brussels the European
Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe have announced the winners of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2017. DeFlat Kleiburg in Amsterdam is the 2017 Winner of Prize. The architects are NL architects and XVW architectuur and the client Kondor WesselsVastgoed. DeFlat is an innovative renovation of one of the biggest apartment buildings in The Netherlands called Kleiburg, a bend slab with 500 apartmentsin Amsterdam’s Bijlmermeer neighbourhood. Consortium DeFlat rescued the building from the wrecking ball by turning it into a "Klusflat", meaning that the inhabitants renovate their apartments by themselves. NL architects were awarded the Emerging Architect Prize of the EU Mies Award in 2005 for their work BasketBar in Utrecht.
The 2017 Emerging Architect Prize has been awarded to the Brussels studios MSA/V+ for the work NAVEZ - 5 social units at the northern entrance of Brussels, a housing project that fulfills the double ambition of the local authorities: to represent the urban revalidation scheme with a
landmark at the entrance of the city and to provide exemplary apartments for large families. The client is the City of Schaerbeek. The two awarded projects have been chosen from a list of 355 works from 36 European countries. Five finalists were selected and visited by the Jury: Rivesaltes Memorial Museum,
Katyn Museum in Warsaw, DeFlat Kleiburg in Amsterdam, Kannikegården in Ribe and Ely Court in London, accompanied by the authors of the works, who also gave lectures open to the public.
The Jury has selected the two awarded works for the following reasons: DeFlatKleiburg The Jury valued that the project is a collective effort by many people. The architectural concept was to transform the megablock into a contemporary residential building with flexibility in internal planning, and creating a new edge to the street and the landscape and yet do as little as possible. They considered it to be ‘both heroic and ordinary at the same time’. As the Jury Chairman said, “It challenges current solutions to the housing crisis in European cities, where too often the only ambition is to build more homes year-onyear, while the more profound question of what type of housing should be built goes unanswered. Kleiburg helps us imagine a new kind of architectural project, which responds
to changing household patterns and lifestyles in the twenty-first century. A revitalisation of typologies of the past is as relevant as experimenting with new, untested models in this
quest, just as radically transforming existing buildings is.” The project inspires reflection on the new and complex reality of contemporary living. It proposes new forms of “affordable housing”, adding to what is universally a complex and multi-layered offer (ranging from fully subsidized rent to shared ownership and rentpurchase
schemes) by providing options for the large majority who have a little money but cannot afford to get on the conventional property ladder. This is low-cost habitable space
(€1,200 per m2) – a fantastic new option that does not currently exist.

understood well and solved brilliantly the constructive and economic constraints of the programme and its site: 5 flats in a very small corner at the northern entrance of the city of Brussels. The Jury appreciated the high quality of the flats, which are unique and all provided with natural light from all orientations, outdoor spaces, impressive views and
dynamic spatial experiences both in common and private spaces. They also recognised that the architects had carefully and meticulously worked with the integration of the building in the neighbourhood and the request to create a landmark. In the run-up to the awards ceremony (between May 20 and 25), the finalist and winning buildings of the current edition will organize activities to open their doors to the public and the mpress.
Michel Magnier, Director for Culture and Creativity, DG Education, Youth, Sport and Culture ofm the European Commission and Daniel Mòdol, President of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, will grant the winners the prizes of 60,000€ (primary prize) and 20,000€ (emerging architect prize) on May 26 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilionin Barcelona. The EU Mies Award Day on May 26 will also include the opening of two exhibitions:
- “Made in Europe”, which will present some of the models collected by the Prize since 1988 in 11 containers.
- “2017 EU Mies Award exhibition” will include models, texts, sketches and drawings of the works. The exhibition will travel around Europe and internationally in the next 18 months, with its first stop at BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts Brussels in September 2017. During the same day,“Mies Talks” on ‘Collective housing and regeneration’ and ‘Contemporary architecture and heritage’ will allow Winners, Finalists, shortlisted, clients and people interested to debate on the emerging topics highlighted by the Jury. The day will end with the Award Ceremony at the Barcelona Mies van der Rohe Pavilion at
20:30h and a celebration that will also close the Barcelona Architecture Week. In order to bring the Prize closer to the citizens, and spread knowledge about good architecture, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe has prepared a mobile app so that everyone can view all the works nominated in this year’s edition of the Award in their mobile phone and find out exactly where they are and how to get there. In addition to the works nominated for the 2017 edition, the cities of Berlin, London, Dublin, Paris and Barcelona have included all the works nominated in every edition.

Belgrade Design Week welcomes its partners from eleven European cities to the unique international creative event “HUMAN CITIES/ SHARING CLOUD - Kragujevac 2017”, inviting the broadest public, citizens and citizens initiatives, architects, urban planers, the creative community, artists, economists, municipal administrations, media, academia and students from Serbia and the entire region, to join us on Friday, February 17th in Kragujevac.
The program is made of leading European case studies with easily understandable, concrete, hands-on “How to-” lectures, from cities committed to use design as a tool for changing their urban and public spaces and transforming their public authorities' mindsets.
Entry is free, places are limited by the hall capacity, lectures are provided with simultaneous translation from English to Serbian and vice versa. The organiser reserves the right to change the program without prior information.
Belgrade Design Week and the City of Kragujevac, Serbia, are honoured to invite you to the "HUMAN CITIES/ SHARING CLOUD - Kragujevac 2017” event, on February 17th 2017 in the First Gymnasium of Kragujevac. Next to a strong line up of local speakers showcasing the urban development of Kragujevac, the conference will present extraordinary lectures from eleven European cities gathered around the Human Cities/ project, all closely related to urban realities in Serbia and the region. The HUMAN CITIES/ project is a crucial pan-european platform for sharing best practices in finding innovative solutions for living in cities today, and BDW’s conference offers a great opportunity for Serbia to present its own findings and developments to a broad European audience, and vice-versa, which is why we named the project THE SHARING CLOUD.

Kragujavac is privileged to be the host of this phase of the Human Cities/ project, right after Sent Etienne, London and Milan, and just before Ljubljana, Graz, Cieszyn, Helsinki, Bilbao, Tallinn and Brussels. BDW has chosen Kragujevac to be the topic of its HUMAN CITIES/ focus, because of the city's important historical urban planing and industrial heritage in the heartland of Serbia, as well as current challenging historical crossroads between a postindustrial town and key regional university centre, with 20.000 students.
The initiative “Creative Grand Park of Kragujevac” is BDW’s contribution to the “HUMAN CITIES/ Challenging the City Scale 2014-2018” project, co-financed by the EU program Creative Europe, as part of BDW’s ongoing strictly non-profit action to develop “100 creative playgrounds for children in Serbia”, made possible by the donation of the Foundation Dragica Nikolić to the City of Kragujevac.

The "HUMAN CITIES/ SHARING CLOUD - Kragujevac 2017” program consists of an inspirational creative conference searching for proposals for design-thinking and participative-urbanism in Serbia and Europe today, as well as an exhibition of works of all eleven partners of the "Human Cities/ Challenging the City Scale 2014-2018” project. One of the presented projects is BDW’s "Creative Grand Park” development, developed as part of the Human Cities/ project and built as the first private / public partnership of its kind, between the Foundation Dragica Nikolić and the City of Kragujevac.
The conference ”HUMAN CITIES/ SHARING CLOUD - Kragujevac 2017” ” presents a unique opportunity for engaged citizens and citizen’s initiatives, municipal administrations, universities, urban planers, architects, artists, economists, government, media and students from all vocations, to get introduced to the latest European developments about exploring the way in which the inhabitants reclaim the constantly evolving contemporary city (especially through experiments in the urban space) and ways of (re)inventing city life, as sources of well-being and quality of life. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE in Austria 2018
ORTE Architekturnetzwerk Niederösterreich grants a studio apartment in Krems as well as a scholarship financed by the Federal Province of Lower Austria to architects, spatial planners, landscape architects, theorists and curators focusing their work on architecture.
The providing of a studio apartment for free as well as the awarding of a scholarship by the Federal Province of Lower Austria are based on the following premises: enabling artists from abroad to work in Austria and to get to know the architectural scene of Lower Austria.
Prerequisite for a successful application is a degree in an architectural relevant discipline (architecture, landscape planning, city planning, urban planning, spatial planning, etc.). ORTE focuses on the communication of contemporary architecture in Lower Austria and is therefore particularly interested in projects which are related to practice. Concepts with life-world focus as well as site-specific and theoretical approaches are desirable, not as much as a solely academic-scientific analysis of the medium architecture. The scholarship is linked to a final presentation of the on-site created work, which can also take up the own work or source-related architectural topics or current topics of the local architectural scene. The Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture (ESA) offers young architectural and urban design professionals a two-year post-diploma course called "Architecture Des Milieux - ADM". This post-degree training is done in the ESA in Paris.
It leads to a recognized Master's Degree ("DES") and proposes a joint theoretical (thesis) and practical (project) approach on the City/Nature relationship. The training takes up to one week per month. Each student embodies his work in a mutating territorial situation of his/her choice.

The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe announced today the list of 356 works competing for the 2017 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award.

Nominated sites for 2017
Housing and buildings for Cultural programmes continue being the most representative works. They are followed by education buildings which have
increased their presence significantly. The number of mixed used works connected to cultural and social programmes such as a Library with an
Auditorium or a City Hall with a Civic Centre have also increased and form the fourth most important group of works.
Background
Initiated in 1987 after an agreement between the European Parliament and the Barcelona City Council, the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award has been co-organised by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the European Commission since 2001. The Prize is awarded biennially to works completed within the previous two years. The principal objectives are to achieve a thorough understanding of the transformation of Europe’s built environment; to recognize and commend excellence and innovation in the field of architecture (in conceptual and construction terms) and
to draw attention to the important contribution of European professionals in theb development of new ideas, the clients who support them and the citizens that enjoy them. The Fundació Mies van der Rohe was created in 1983 with the aim of reconstructing the German Pavilion that Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created for the 1929 International Exhibition. The foundation fosters debate on and awareness of themes related to contemporary architecture and urban planning, as well as encouraging studies on the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and on the Modern Movement. Creative Europe is the European Commission's framework programme for support to the culture and audiovisual sectors. The cultural and creative sectors embody Europe’s immensely rich and diverse cultural heritage, and contribute to the development of our societies. These sectors play a big role in the European economy and help generate growth and jobs.
Process
86 independent experts, the national architecture associations from the 39 participating countries and the Advisory Committee nominated the 356 projects that
will compete for the Prize and the Emerging Architect Prize. The Jury will make a shortlist of 40 works in late January 2017 and afterwards it will announce the 5 Finalists that will be visited in April. The Granting Ceremony will take place on May 26 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona with the Winners, the Finalists, the Jury members, the clients of the works, authorities from the European Commission and Parliament and the Barcelona City Council and all those people who support an architecture that responds to the needs of our century.
Prize
The Prize Winner receives 60.000€ and a sculpture that evokes the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion of Barcelona. Professionals starting out on their careers have the opportunity to become an Emerging Architect Winner, and receive the sculpture together with 20.000€. The prestige of the Prize and the determination to disseminate the knowledge and savoir-faire of European architects is brought forward with the organization of exhibitions and debates worldwide, bringing architecture nearer to citizens.

ACE reiterates its commitments with respect to climate change on the opening of COP22
To mark the opening of the 22nd Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) on 7 November in Marrakech, ACE reiterated that the buildings sector can contribute significantly to achieving climate goals and that Architecture is a powerful source of solutions in the medium term, at low-cost, both at buildings and city levels. ACE workshop at the Lisbon Triennale: Cities as Problem-Makers and Problem-Solvers
On Wednesday 16 November, ACE and the Portuguese Order of Architects (OA) co-organised a workshop titled "From Land to the Sea, from House to City: Cities as Problem-Makers and Problem-Solvers". The event, which took place ias part of the 2016 Lisbon Architecture Triennale, brought architects and local, national and EU experts together to discuss the challenges that EU cities face and the solutions that architecture can bring. ACE responds to the EU Commission’s consultation on indicators for the assessment of environmental performance of buildings
In its Communication of July 2014 on Resource Efficiency Opportunities in the Building Sector, the EU Commission announced the development of a EU framework of indicators to assess the environmental performance of buildings in order to help building professionals and their clients to prioritise their action in the area of environmental improvements, as well as facilitate greater comparability of data. In early October, ACE submitted a response to a public consultation of the EU Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) on draft indicators for the assessment of the environmental performance of buildings. Working Party on Building Passport
On 27 September 2016, Judit Kimpian, Chair of the ESA Work Group, attended a meeting organised by DG GROW on an initiative aimed at developing a Building Passport. Similar to medical records or a car’s maintenance log book, a Building Passport would allow access to relevant data and information on buildings. DG GROW works from the premise that market participants in the construction sector routinely gather and discard information along the building value chain. Read more
Madrid Leaders’ Summit: Bringing the building sector together to deliver a renovation revolution
On 20-21 September, six ACE delegates took part in the Madrid Leaders’ Summit, hosted by the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid (COAM). The event was organised in the framework of the BUILD UPON project and gathered 170 experts from central and local governments, construction companies, financing institutions, research institutes and non-profit associations. The Special Session of the ACE General Assembly was dedicated to “The impact of the Single Market Strategy on Architects”. Speakers from the European Commission discussed with the ACE representatives the implications of the Single Market Strategy for European architects. Read more
ACE participation in CE.ZA.AR awards and Conference
On 6 September 2016, ACE President Luciano Lazzari attended the CE.ZA.AR awards ceremony in Bratislava. The Prize is awarded annually on the anniversary of the Slovak Chamber of Architects. The awards are proposed for outstanding professional performance and architectural works that contribute to the enrichment of material culture in Slovakia. Read more

The Commission adopts a “Clean Energy for All Europeans” package
On 30 November 2016, the EU Commission published a package titled “Clean Energy for All Europeans”, through which it proposes revising several key pieces of legislation in the field of energy, in order to reach the EU's 2030 climate and energy targets, including the Energy Efficiency (EED) and the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD) Directives. European Construction Sector Observatory (ECSO)
The European Construction Sector Observatory (ECSO) is a 3-year project run by DG GROW aiming to inform European policymakers and stakeholders on market conditions and policy developments in the construction sector through regular analysis and comparative assessments. Read more
EU Building Stock Observatory
In October, the Commission launched an EU Building Stock Observatory in order to monitor the energy performance of buildings across Europe. It assesses improvements in the energy efficiency of buildings and how this impacts on the actual energy consumption of the buildings sector overall. Read more
Entry into force of the Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement legally entered into force on 4 November 2016, following the EU’s ratification of the deal a month before. This historic event comes less than a year after COP21 in Paris and just days ahead of the UN COP22 climate conference in Marrakech. Read more
UN Habitat adopts a New Urban Agenda in Quito
On 20 October, U.N. Habitat partners adopted a New Urban Agenda at the U.N. Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) held in Quito (Ecuador). This Agenda contains guidelines to make cities all over the world more inclusive, green, safe and prosperous. It is a cornerstone in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Urban Agenda: new knowledge sources available for Europe's cities
In October, the EU Commission launched two new sources of information on cities, with the objective fostering the exchange of information and best practices. The first, a new "One-stop shop" portal, provides information on EU policies such as climate change adaptation, mobility or circular economy that have a direct impact on cities and urban areas. Infringement procedure against Germany regarding minimum tariffs
The European Commission has taken further steps in the infringement procedure against Germany regarding minimum compulsory tariffs for architects and engineers (Honorarordnung für Architekten und Ingenieure/HOAI) on 16 November announced that the case will be taken before the Court of Justice of the European Union. At the end of October 2016 the Architects‘ Association of Lithuania announced the winners of the 2015-2016 Lithuanian Architecture Awards. This bi-annual award recognises the 5 best projects, designed and realised (or not) by Lithuanian architects in Lithuania and abroad. Read more
CSCAE Gold Architecture Medal and CSCAE Medals 2016
The Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE) awarded its 2016 Medals in a joint ceremony held at the Senate Palace in Madrid on the 24t November 2016. Read more
